English Victorian numbered (83) longcase workshop Regulator. Solid golden oak case with carved endive scroll work behind glazed door. Eight-day, time-only movement with dead beat escapement, maintaining power and compensated cylinder pendulum. Silvered brass round dial with subsidiary seconds and hour rings. Dial engraved with makers name:

J.W. Benson. Ludgate Hill.

Renowned as both clock and watchmaker who held Royal Warrants to Queen Victoria during the 19th Century and was responsible for constructing over three hundred turret clocks throughout Great Britain and the world. This firm of clockmakers is recorded working from 1844 until 1873. This clock was constructed circa 1845 as confirmed by the early numbered movement.
