HomeBarometers: Bruce (English)

English Victorian walnut and oak marine barometer with carved cresting and foliate carving above brass cistern cover. The bone register plate has inscribed decorations to weather predictions and a double vernier with original bone keys.

The sympiesometer, on a silvered brass plate, works in conjunction with the mercury reading and is considered to be very accurate when comparative observations were required.

Register plate inscribed:

J. Bruce, Liverpool.

There is no record of a John Bruce working as a barometer maker in Liverpool, but there is a John Bruce working in London during the period this barometer was constructed (circa 1884), so it is probable that he moved to Liverpool later in his working life.
