Early English "Trap Door" marine barometer by a renowned London maker. The tapered "Bow Front" case with ebonised wood cistern cover confirm its early construction. Finely engraved, silvered brass register and thermometer plate. Original brass gimbal. The maker's name is engraved on a silvered brass plate above the door:

Cary, London.

The founding member of this renowned family of instrument makers was William Cary, a pupil of Jesse Ramsden, who is considered to have been England's greatest instrument maker. This barometer was constucted by William Cary, 1789–1825. Circa 1810.
