HomeMahogany Longcase Clocks: Clafton (English)

English longcase clock. Exceptionally fine mahogany case of light color with flame veneers to trunk door and base and cantered corners displaying an ebonized diamond pattern. The hood, with Corinthian-capped, reeded columns, has carved cresting with original brass paterie and central finial. Eight-day duration movement, striking hours on a bell.

The painted dial—with fine quality artwork displaying a Dutch-style raised windmill in arch and the seasons to each corner—has arabic numerals, seconds ring, and is inscribed with maker's name:

Clafton, N. Allerton.

George Clafton is recorded as being born 1784 and working between 1803 and 1808. Stepson and apprentice to Joshua Pannell, a renowned local clockmaker. Other Comments: Only two known clocks by him.
