English bracket clock. Ebonized and ebony veneered case sitting on cast brass feet. The case is decorated with ormolu mounts. Cast brass basket top with serpent entwined swing handle, acorn finials above a brass bound door. Eight-day-duration, two-train fusee movement, with anchor escapement playing a tune on the quarters on a carillon of eight bells then striking the hours on a gong.

The 7-inch-square brass dial with strike/silent, silvered chapter ring, roman numerals and matted centre is numbered (2692) and engraved with the maker's name:

Payne & Co. 163 New Bond St. London.

William Payne & Co are recorded working in London from 1828 until 1881. Circa 1840.
