Home: Platinum Range Longcase Clocks: Pitt (English)
![]() |
A small George III English longcase clock of outstanding quality. The solid mahogany case with broken arch hood has exceptional "flame veneers" to both trunk and base. The trunk door also features centered an oval inlaid satinwood "water lily" motif, with other unusual satinwood inlays to the cantered sides. The eight-day duration movement of excellent quality strikes the hours on a bell. The very unique arch engraved dial has a "sun" boss in the arch, a rare "penny moon" phase below on a center -matted dial with "sunbursts" around winding holes. The lower matted dial features a "lunette" calendar with a fleur-de-lis indicator. The maker's name and place of work are finely engraved at the bottom of the silvered brass chapter ring: Caleb Pitt. Frome.* Price on request. Dial | Dial Detail | "Penny Moon" |

*Caleb Pitt is recorded working first in London as both a clock and watchmaker between 1790 and 1825, and is credited with both a gold pear cased pocket watch, now with the London museum, and a very fine astrological clock (constructed in Frome) recorded by "Somerset Clockmakers, by Bell Chambers with reference to an article in the 1955 Connoisseur magazine (Feb issue). |
