James Robinson, Circa 1740 A spectacular George II London longcase clock with original Chinoiserie decoration. The black laqcuer flat top case with break arch trunk door has the original gold leaf gesso work to both trunk and base and is in exceptional condition. The eight-day-duration movement, striking hours on a bell, includes a strike/silent lever and the original brass sleeved weights. The silvered brass arch dial has the very rare automata "Dove of Peace" moving to and fro in arch. The dial includes both a seconds ring and date aperture and is engraved with both the maker's name and address on a silvered brass plaque below center of dial: James Robinson. Wellclose Square. Sold Listed working at this address as both a clock and watchmaker between 1730 and 1770. This clock constructed circa 1740.* |
