HomeMahogany Longcase Clocks: Victorian "Regulator" (English)

An English early Victorian longcase regulator. The attractive case with glazed door is veneered with both mahogany and rosewood. Full reeded hood columns with brass capitals and half-reeded trunk columns surmounted with brass corinthian caps complete the decoration. Eight-day-duration, time-only movement with chamfered plates. Dead beat escapement and maintaining power.

The round, silvered brass dial, with subsidiary seconds and hour rings, is engraved with the inscription:

"Regulator"

Maker unknown. Circa 1850. The exceptional quality of this movement suggests it was constructed by one of three makers: Thwaites & Reed, Elliotts, or Smith's of Clerkenwell.

$18,500
